A New Year Ahead and I am looking for horses

I know it feels like there are months to go until the end of the year but as it turns out today is the 11th November and 2011 is very nearly 2012. That means my end of year to do list (written in about January) is now in great danger of not being ticked off until about May 2012. However,  one thing I could possibly tick of is to increase my equine photographic portfolio and to do that I need to do a little bargaining.

I am looking for stables,  horse owners and riders in Kent and the surrounding bits of the South East who would be willing to donate a little of their (and their horses) time to allow me to photograph them. In return I will supply a beautifully printed 10 x 8 print and a copy of all the edited images on DVD. Further prints can be arranged. I am hoping to begin shooting these portraits in mid December and through January.

If you are interested please get in touch with me by email or call on 07866426303. Here is a little image of a Welsh Section D by the name of Norman to start with.

Aperture 3

In the same week as psychologists have told us that Apple products extol a ‘religious fervor’ in their devotees I would very much like to tell everyone who wants to buy a piece of photo editing and management software just how good Aperture 3 is. It just works. The image below was shot about an hour ago on the beach at Folkstone. I have come home,  downloaded the RAW file,  edited the version I want and posted it onto my website within a few happily spent moments of technological ease. I have used one bit of software in one screen to do everything. I feel no God like devotion to Steve but I do like things that just work.

Enjoy.

Photography is all about enjoying it later

After a long week of lights I have just taken a small scan through some recent photographic wonderings and began to ponder why anyone bothers carrying a big heavy camera around with them trying to find that ‘one shot’. Surely this is no way to relax and enjoy the scenery yet across this country photography is an ever growing pass time – so why do we bother ? We get looked at like we are either terrorists,  paedophiles or at best suspicious whilst taking part in a hobby made universal by the camera phone.

Have a look at the Nikon Wednesday section of photo.net and you will see contributions from across the globe from photographers who just happened to see an image making opportunity in everyday life. These photographs are more interesting because they are often taken by ‘amateurs’ (I mean that in the non money making sense of the word – the quality is often very high) who aren’t trying to make money but looking for a new look.

So why do photographers feel the need to photograph – why not just look,  enjoy and move on.

It could be a little bit of arrogance. I want to show that I can see something others can’t – an angle,  a colour, a whole new view on an old subject.

It could be the hoarders mentality – another image for the collection and another photograph ticked off a mental list of images to capture before the inevitable.

There are also more obvious reasons such as the need for the professional to make money and the bride to remember how she looked on her wedding day.

It could be the sense that the moment in front of me may never happen again and it is worth recording for posterity. In this society the pace of change means a view is not the same for long – a photograph is a evolutionary full stop.

It is probably all of the above plus plenty more. I know I want to create something original and remember where I have been before. It is somehow reassuring to look back over months and years and see images that at the time stood out for me. Each photograph is its own set of memories.

Why do you bring a camera with you ?

Anyhow – here is my small contribution from my photographic walkies last week.

Enjoy,

Flash Talks to Post on Dungeness Shingle

Just a small note to say I will be updating the Dungeness section this week. I managed an hour this evening photographing some of the disused winding equipment on the shingle. Whilst photographing this post against the setting sun I was struck by the contrast of the tripod mounted speedlight and the dilapidation of the rusting steel. To view the gallery click here.
